Shirley Mae Sumners Dodd

Shirley Mae Sumners Dodd was born on May 16, 1936 in Viar, Tenn., to William Grant Sumners and Betty Biggers Sumners Hager. She passed away on Sept. 1, 2021 in Manila at the age of 85. She graduated from Steele High School with Class of 1954. She married James Welton “J.W.” Dodd and had three children, Tommy, Tammy and Michael. She and J.W. owned and operated a trucking business and a truck stop. She had also been employed as a bookkeeper for Utley Lumber Co., Scott Oil Co. and Mid South Sales, Inc. Shirley was a license real estate agent and was associated with Crye-Leike Realty in Blytheville.

She had also been an administrative assistant at Outlook Pointe in Blytheville.

Shirley was a member of the First Baptist Church in Steele and had been the secretary/treasurer of the Steele Alumni Association, the Steele Neighborhood Watch and the Blytheville Board of Realtors. She was a member of the Genealogy Club in Steele in Pemiscot County Historical Society. Shirley was the Municipal Court Clerk in Steele for a number of years. She loved to work in the yard and she also loved to cook sweets to give to her neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Sumners and Betty Hager; two sisters, Madie Darnell Davis and Ruth Ann Dougherty; one brother, Cary Grant Sumners; and one grandchild, Angela K. Dodd.

She is survived by her children, Tom Dodd and his wife Jan of Westworth Village, Texas, Tammy Clowers and her husband Danny of Blytheville, and

Michael Dodd of Issaquah, Wash.; one grandson, Brandon Myers and his wife Lauren of O’Fallon, Mo.; one great-grandson, Alex Myers of O’Fallon, Mo.; two sisters, Alice Jacoby and Carolyn Hager, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and one brother, Jerry Sumners of Olathe, Kan.

The family wants to thank Stonebridge Senior Living Center in Blytheville and the Manila Nursing Center for the care Shirley received from them.

Services were held Sept. 5, at Powell Funeral Home in Steele with Mr. Randy McDaniel officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele.

Pallbearers were Tom Dodd, Michael Dodd, Brandon Myers and Casey Greene.

Powell Funeral Home was in charge of services.
