Blytheville School District modifies its return to school plan

Friday, August 21, 2020

The Blytheville School District has modified its first week of school plan.

"After several meetings with the Governor, Secretary Key, and other officials from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, it was decided that it is in the best interest of our students and teachers to pivot to a slow rollout based on high numbers of COVID in our school district boundaries," Blytheville superintendent Bobby Ashley said late Friday afternoon. "A plan was submitted and approved by DESE to announce. Please refer to the following chart to identify when students should attend school next week. All Virtual Academy Students will be contacted online by their teachers and will remain at home as planned. Please see the attached document for information."

The chart reads as follows:

"In light of the increase in positive cases of COVID within the Blytheville School DIstrict boundaries, and reaching the Critical Response Level on the District Response Document from Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, adjustments have been made for a phased in approach. Our District Guiding Coalition reviewed the in-person numbers and developed a plan to allow for more social distancing for students at each grade level for at least the first week of school.

In this plan we have divided our students by girls and boys to allow smaller numbers of students in each classroom as we work to familiarize them with the new routines and procedures that will be in place because of COVID.

Students in Self contained classes and ALE will attend every day in order to provide more structure and set routines. Kindergarten students will attend every day rotating between boys and girls to help them learn routines and procedures.

All Virtual Academy Students will work from home and will be contacted by their teacher as normal during the week.
