Blytheville AFB facility listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Saturday, February 3, 2018
The alert facility at the former Blytheville Air Force Base—a site identified as a potential tourism attraction—has been named to the National Register of Historic Places, the United States’ official list of historically significant properties. Also, the Mississippi County government was recently awarded funding through Arkansas Parks and Tourism to conduct a feasibility study evaluating the property as a potential tourist draw to Mississippi County and northeast Arkansas. The “alert shack” and surrounding area remain intact on the former base, representing a unique U.S. defense strategy used during the Cold War.
