Should Christians get involved in politics?

Monday, October 13, 2014

To the editor:

A question has been asked of me, and it was, should Christians get involved in politics? First, we must know what is politics. Well, politics by itself is not bad at all. It is the act of taking part in your government. Now, there are some who use it for their own interest, and not for the people. Corruption has given politics a bad name.

Moses was our first military and spiritual leader. The New Testament in Luke 20:22-25, Jesus is saying that since we do live under the authority of a human government we ought to honor that authority, as long as it does not conflict with our obedience to Jesus Christ. God is sovereign. Example of Jesus not obeying the priestly authorities to stop teaching. Also the Apostles.

1 Peter 3:17, For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. A church that never spoke up for the poor or oppressed is ineffective. Some Christian's views on the subject of politics are differing. Some view that Christians should not play any part in politics, and some hold the view that government should be run according to their Christian principles. If we want our government to run more effectively, we as Christians must play our part. Christians have to opportunity to ensure our government to be just and fair to all citizens.

During the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, if it was not for the black churches in the South involved in politics, blacks would still be stuck in the dark ages. Black churches were involved in politics, but in a peaceful manner. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was a Christian minister who was fighting for civil rights for black people in America. So in my opinion, Christians should involve themselves, but limit themselves. There should be a line where Christian's involvement ends.

We must face the facts, that the history of the world has been with a cycle of evil and suffering, due to politics throughout the whole world. Evil in the world is one of the greatest challenges we all face. When humans beings do bad things to one another, this is moral evil.

The politics that Christians should involve themselves in is something that I read in the Times magazine of 2013. They reported that in crime and punishments, blacks make up 37 percent of prison population, death row 42 percent, juvenile arrested 32 percent, 45 percent of drug offenders in prison. 8 percent of the black population has lost the right to vote as a result of felony as compared with 2 percent of other racial groups. The unemployment rate for blacks in 2013: white 7 percent, blacks 15 percent, blacks age 20-25. 23 percent.

The justice system in America has failed the black male. We can see it almost daily. It is hard sometimes to explain the disparity to our children in a way that strengthens their faith, and does not leave them with unanswered questions that will undermine their faith. Their is a reason of this disparity, and I don't have enough space in this letter to explain it in a proper formula.

The question, do you think the justice system is biased against black people? 68 percent black, yes, and 25 percent white, yes. If one is in denial you will never see the truth.

Jesus said that he is the truth and life. Some lie, cheat and sell their souls for power, and at best they have a few years of power over other people, and then they lose it and or get old and die completely powerless. This is the hope that man has in Jesus Christ. All seafaring in this world will end one day. Revelation 21:4. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the woeld will know peace," Jimi Hendrix.

May God guide you every step of the way.
