Collect delinquent taxes before creating new tax

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

To the editor:

We do not need to add a new half-cent tax for the hospital. We are already paying taxes that go to the hospital and schools, etc. You can collect the money that is delinquent -- the unpaid property taxes and personal taxes. There were 36 pages of unpaid property taxes in the newspaper recently.

How about adding a penalty to those unpaid taxes that will encourage the owners to pay when due instead of letting them go delinquent every year until the last day to pay before the property tax is auctioned off. Some people let them get auctioned and they still have another year to redeem them. All this delay in paying costs the county extra to keep up with the paperwork.

Also, it's time to start shutting off the water to any property that is delinquent on the water bill. As long as they're still getting water they won't find a way to pay the bill.
