Gene Cable

Mr. Gene Cable, 79, of Steele, passed from this life on Monday, June 23, 2014, at Baptist Hospital East in Memphis.

Gene was the owner/operator of Cable's Barbecue, alongside Virginia, his wife of 39 years. Gene was born in Blytheville to Willie Edmon "Bill" and Vashti Stewart Cable and attended New Liberty Baptist Church. Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served his country with honor during the Korean War and a past member of the American Legion. Gene was an avid fisherman, especially crappie fishing. He possessed that right touch to place a jig in the right place and lure the crappie too him.

When he wasn't fishing he was enthusiastically enjoying Nascar racing. Gene also loved to read, especially the John Grisham novels, of which he had read them all. Gene also loved nature. He loved to sit and watch the rabbits, squirrels and birds along with his faithful dog, Corky.

Gene is survived by his wife, Virginia Darby Cable of the home;

His children, Tonya Morrissy and husband Joe of St. Louis, Bill Cable and wife Amanda of West Point, Miss., Cassandra Buford and husband Junior of Pascagoula, Miss., Marty Crawford and wife Rhonda of Blytheville, Katrina Tompkins and husband Derek of Plano, Texas, Rhonda McCarty and husband Jim of Chicago; and

Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A gathering of remembrance for family and friends to celebrate the life of Gene will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Dogwood Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with Dr. Tommy Carney officiating. All services are under the direction of Cobb Funeral Home.
