Dr. Hunter Cowan Sims Jr.

Dr. Hunter Cowan Sims Jr., 90, of Blytheville, passed from this life Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at his home.

Born in Burdette to Hunter Cowan Sims Sr. and Charlene Rich Sims, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blytheville.

When he was discharged from the service in 1954, he returned to Blytheville and set up his medical practice where he remained active until the early 1990s. Dr. Sims retired as a general surgeon yet he continued to go to his office daily.

He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. He loved traveling and flying his beloved red Cessna 210 and was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was an avid outdoorsman and Tennessee Vols fan, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, water and snow skiing, and golfing at the Blytheville Country Club where he was a member for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Sims.

Dr. Sims is survived by his daughters, Emmalyn Smith and husband, Ron, of Chantilly, Va., Corlea Burnett and husband, Clark, of Memphis, and Peggy Hancock and husband, Jackie, of Germantown, Tenn.;

His grandchildren, Nate Smith and wife, Kit, Jackson Hancock, Becca Graves, Leah Little and husband, Paul, and Katie Wells and husband, Adam;

Six great-grandchildren;

His nephew, Hunter Glen Rounsaville and wife, Starla, and great-nephew, Brayden Rounsaville, both of Blytheville; and

His beloved friend and caregiver, Shirley Eskins of Blytheville.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, in Elmwood Cemetery with Dr. Robin Moore officiating. The family received friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Cobb Funeral Home prior to services. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.cobbfuneralhome.com
