Blytheville Mayor James Sanders recently became the first Mississippi County mayor to earn Certified Municipal Official certification. The certification requires a minimum of 21 hours of training, including 15 in the core courses -- City Government 101, Municipal Finance and Human Resources and Personnel, according to the Municipal League's Ken Wasson. The other courses are continuing education-type courses. Wasson said on average, around 75 municipal officials from the 500 Arkansas cities earn the certification each year. Blytheville City Councilman Stan Parks also earned the certification. Former State Rep. Tommy Baker of Osceola played a big role in starting the program when he was president of the Arkansas Municipal League in 1999-2000.
