Volunteers make "Mad City Money" a success

Saturday, June 8, 2013

To the editor,

I am writing to thank all of the community volunteers who recently gave their time to a wonderful event, the TRiO "Mad City Money" simulation.

Mad City Money simulates a mock community, complete with a finance company, realtors, grocery store, clothing store, car dealership, day care center and other businesses that are essential to living as an adult. The simulation was sponsored by the TRiO Educational Talent Search program, housed on the ANC campus, and the Northeast Arkansas Federal Credit Union. Over 100 10th-graders from 13 school districts participated in the simulation on the ANC main campus, where they learned to maneuver through a month of life on a fixed income and with a family in tow.

A big thank-you goes out to Mary Gay Shipley, Jeannette Sells, George Hubbard, David Humphrey, Kevin Snow, Janet Robertson, Jessica Gee, Wayne and Suzanne Kenner, Betty Koval, Torya Fields, Tiffany Hoskins, Janita Young, Amy Louise Gullic, Linda Peterson, Bernice Gray, Jennifer Hopper, Micha Pankey, Laura Martin, Grant Hill, Mitzi McClain, Louis Parchman, Mike Huffman, Marcia Raeber-McClain, Kathryn Davis, Tiffany Allison, Jena Weld and the entire staff of the Northeast Arkansas Federal Credit Union of Blytheville. Each of these individuals played an important role in the simulation and gave advice and mentoring to the students.

The primary goal of the simulation is for young students to gain experience in managing a budget and realizing the costs incurred by families. Checkbooks were provided by the NEAFCU and each purchase or expense was recorded as the students made their way through the mad city.

Thank you to everyone who assisted with this event. The young students who participated learned so much from the experience and found themselves surprised by circumstances many times. The staff of the TRiO Talent Search program includes Director Tonya Harris, Cathy Ellis Lee, Kathy Fincher, Susan Pharo Dryer, Mary Ann Hughes Garren, Candice Wilborn and Janie Greenwell.

Thank you all!
