City worker goes the extra mile

Thursday, November 8, 2012

To the editor:

One would have to be blind and deaf to be unaware of the many problems within the Blytheville city government. However, kudos are deserved by one city employee for "going the extra mile" when a pothole (one of many needing repair on the road through the old air base) cause one of my hubcaps to pop off and roll away.

I was unaware of this problem, and it was certainly not the job of the golf course greenskeeper to address this road hazard issues -- especially when he was not on city time, but on his way home.

Nevertheless, he flagged me down, went back and searched in the weeds to retrieve it, produced a rubber mallet from his truck and put the hubcap back on my wheel. He refused any compensation beyond my thanks, and I neglected to get his name.

So while there remain numerous civic issues receiving well-deserved criticism, let's not forget the individual city employees who are performing their jobs at or above expectations every single day. This one went out of his way to help a stranger and it was much appreciated.
