Civil discourse sought for public meeting

Friday, April 27, 2012

To the editor:

I recently attended a town hall meeting (in Gosnell) to discuss expenditure topics affecting all township residents. The turnout was minimal, both topics were controversial, and the discussions were pointed and heated. I was disturbed and ashamed that some participants did not show the elected officials the respect they deserve.

At the same time, I feel it not fitting for these elected officials to voice their disagreements with each other in front of a public forum. Differences should be handled or settled at appropriate sessions, such as monthly or special meetings. If we, the voting public, don't like the way our representatives are running things, then when the time comes, vote for someone you think will. Then the majority that votes decides.

I am a retired veteran of the United States Armed Forces and believe in and fought for our constitution. Free speech and the right to vote is a citizen's right and privilege. Please don't discredit or dishonor it!
