On May 20, 1937, America's darling, Amelia Earhart, began what was to be her last monumental feat in a lifetime of such achievements. She took off from Oakland, Calif., with her navigator, Fred Noonan, in her Lockheed Electra twin-engine plane with the goal of becoming the first woman to fly around the world.
