Mildred Elizabeth McWhirter, 82, of Manila, the widow of Kenneth McWhirter, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born near Lake City, she was the daughter of ht elate Joseph Earl and Thelma Turner Hicks, and had been a longtime Manila resident. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals' baseball fan and a member of the First Baptist Church in Manila.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Kenny McWhirter; two brothers Clifford Hicks and Wesley Hicks; and a sister, Louise Hicks.

She is survived by a son, Chuck McWhirter; and a daughter, Janice McWhirter, both of Manila; three sisters, Ruby Walsh, Reatha Armes, both of Mt. Home, and Velma Carbonara of Woodridge, Ill.; two grandchildren, Christi and Matthew; and five great-grandchildren, Devin, Justin, Christopher, Katelyn and Kallum.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Howard Funeral Chapel in Manila with Rev. William Piercy officiating. Burial will follow in the Manila Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers are Roger VanDyke, Howard Haynes, Donald Master, Aaron Master, Paul Wayne Hicks and Jimmy Hicks.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family received visitors from 6-8 Monday evening at the funeral home.
