Carl Madison Byrd

Carl Madison Byrd, 83, of Manila, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at his home. Born at Leachville he was the son of the late E.E. and Lula Coffell Byrd and had been a Leachville-Manila area resident for most of his life. He was a retired lab technician and administrator for the former Rodman Hospital in Leachville. Mr. Byrd was a former Manila Scoutmaster and also retired from the Manila Volunteer Fire Department. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving as a Hospital corpsman attached to the 2nd Marine Division during the invasions of Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Byrd was a longtime member of the Manila First Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Byrd, in 2007.

Survivors include two sons, John Byrd of Manila and Victor "Vic" Byrd of Fayetteville, Ga.; two brothers, Edgar Byrd of Long Beach, Calif., and Frank Byrd of Manila; and three grandchildren, Nick Byrd, Bria Byrd, and Sarah Byrd.

Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Manila with Rev. Ferrel Duffel and Rev. William Piercy officiating. Burial with military honors was held in the Manila Cemetery.
