It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Shirley Howard, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, who left us peacefully on Aug. 15, 2024. Born Sept. 24, 1952, Shirley was a prime example of love, kindness and grace throughout her life.
Shirley was known for her warm heart and generous spirit. She was a symbol of strength for her family and a ray of light to all who knew her. Her love knew no bounds, and she was cherished by her family and countless friends. Shirley had a special way of making everyone feel welcomed and loved, and her home was always a place of comfort and joy.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Laura Washington; father, Doc Washington; husband, Charles Howard; son, Philip Washington; brothers, Early Dority Jr. and Frank Washington; and sister, Janice Washington.
She is survived by her daughter, Robin Cobb; grandchildren, James Garner Jr. aka Papa, Kandace (Vincent) Thomas, Stephanie Smallwood, Jasmine Bell-Cobb, Destiny Carpenter, Rhyan Washington, Philip Washington JR, Phylynise Washington, Laura Washington, Trayshioun Washington; great-grandchildren, Mya Garner, Tymere Fortune, Jayla Garner, James Garner III, Ava Thomas, Vincent Thomas, Miracle Beason, Blessings Beason, Rhylee Washington, Tylahn Washington and Rhylinn Washington; siblings, Lorraine Walker, Helen Johnson, Freddie (Minnie) Washington, Barbra (JW) Burns, Margerette Yankaway, Robert Washington, Laura Washington, Tangie Washington, Elizabeth Washington; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will forever remember her warmth, wisdom and unwavering love.
Though she may be gone from our sight, she will never be gone from our hearts. Her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
Visitation will be Saturday, Aug. 31, beginning at 11 a.m. at Greater Jubilee MB Church, 2200 Marguerite. Funeral service will follow at 12 noon.
