Major General (Ret) James P. Smothermon, USAF
Major General (Ret) James P. Smothermon, USAF, passed away peacefully at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., on June 15, 2024. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, the former Sandra Lee Long. Both were born and raised in Blytheville.
Pat dedicated over 34 years serving his country in the United States Air Force. He was a command pilot accumulating over 5,200 flight hours in numerous aircraft including the B-47, B-58, F-4 (188 combat missions in Vietnam) and FB-111. The General also served in command positions around the globe including postings in Germany, Turkey, Italy and South Korea. His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross.
Following his military service, Pat and Sandra settled in Texas where he served as Director of Information Technology for the State of Texas and was elected to the Board of Directors, Air Force Village Military Retirement Community.
Pat is survived by his son Mike (wife Vicky), granddaughter Jessica (husband Michael) and two wonderful great-grandchildren Amelia and Justin.
