Opal Inez LaFarlette, 83, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022 at Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House. She was born Oct. 29, 1938 in Delfore. She was a lifelong resident of Monette and a member of the Monette First Baptist Church.

Opal grew up on a farm and farmed for a good part of her life. She was an extremely hard worker, regardless of what the job was. The personality she had was very outgoing. She was never at a loss for words and could always keep the conversation going.

Opal had a few passions, one of which was cats, she loved cats and had many through the years. Seemingly every stray cat knew to go to her house and she would always care for them. Another passion was cooking and baking. She was well known for her skills. Everyone at church knew when she brought food, it was going to be good. Her cooking and baking skills were passed on to her children and they use those skills with pride knowing from which they came.

As her children can attest, she was a very dedicated mother. She did all the right things even under sometimes difficult circumstances. Her children have always and will continue to have such admiration and respect for all she stood for, but in particular for the parenting job she did. The world should be filled up with mothers like Opal. She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Beulah Brown, and a brother and sister-in-law, Jodie and Ione Brown.

Those surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Barry LaFarlette (Jerri), Sharmaine LaFarlette (Jeannie) and Shannon LaFarlette; three granddaughters, Brittney Cato, Courtney Crawford (Ryan) and Alexis LaFarlette; three great-grandchildren, Lakyn and Rhett Crawford and Kennedy Cato; a sister and brother-in-law, Verna Lou and David Harrell; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Monette First Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Reed officiating. Interment will follow at Monette Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Gannon Varner, Griffin Varner, Allen Dewitt, Logan Dewitt, Keven Varner and Dusty Harrell.

Lasting memorials may be sent to NEA Humane Society.
