Speed limit changes in school zone

Saturday, October 16, 2021

Blytheville assistant police chief Ricky Jefferson confirmed that the speed limit on Moultrie Drive has been lowered from 30 to 20 mph during school hours. Jefferson said dangerous driving near the Blytheville Elementary School led to the change. “There haven’t been any accidents over there but there have been some near misses. It’s all just geared to the safety of the children.” While there haven’t been any other speed limit changes relating to this issue, Jefferson said the department will be monitoring and reviewing traffic around the school zones. Arkansas law requires that the speed limits in school zones be no higher than 25 mph. An additional state law went into effect prior to this school year, requiring drivers to stop at least 30 feet away when buses are loading and unloading. Failure to do so can result in 90 days in jail, a fine ranging from $250 and $1,000, or possibly both. Any violator of this state law can also be charged with a Class A misdemeanor.
