Bernice Tompkins

Bernice Tompkins of Monette, 86, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at Manila Nursing Center. She was born March 2, 1932, in Macey to the late Arthur and Bertha Keith Dougherty. She graduated from Childress High School in 1949. At one time Mrs. Bernice owned and operated the Monette Dime Store. She served her community as a Girl and Boy Scout leader and a member of the Monette American Legion Auxiliary for many years. She was a member of the Monette First Baptist Church and loved singing praises to her Lord. Mrs. Bernice loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Junior Tompkins; a daughter, Melissa Tompkins; a sister, Paralee McFarlin; brothers, Junior, Lavern, Ray, Bill, Charles and David Dougherty, and an infant brother.

She is survived by her children, Patty Qualls (Rocky) of Monette, Ritchie Tompkins (Anita) of Biloxi, Miss., and Jason Tompkins (Tammy) of Monette; grandchildren, Garison Tompkins, Lucas Qualls (Jessica), Letisha West (Brian), Adam Tompkins (Tori), Torie Tompkins and Zander Tompkins; great-grandchildren, Sean Qualls, Emma Jane Tompkins, Madalyn West and Sawyer Qualls; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Gregg Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Reed officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers include Garison Tompkins, Lucas Qualls, Thomas McFarlin, Jackie Wayne Gathright, Claude Earl Barnett, Mike Smith and Mark Rolland.
