Chickasaws earn share of league title

Tuesday, February 5, 2019

The Blytheville Chickasaws pulled out a huge win, 44-39, Tuesday night against the Brookland Bearcats on Senior Night. After the Valley View Blazers shocked the Westside Warriors, the Chicks earned a share of the conference title. The Chickasaws trailed to start the game as the Bearcats jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the first quarter, but the Blytheville took the lead back in the second quarter and led 22-21 at the half.

Both teams struggled to score in the third quarter, but the Bearcats held a one point lead heading into the final quarter. BHS (11-3, 16-5), however, outscored the Bearcats 16-10 down the stretch to defeat Brookland 44-39.

The Chicks were led by senior big man Winston Peace with 12 points.

“Best poise we’ve had all season coming down the stretch finishing the ballgame. We’ve been at times, like last time, we were a little bit shaky with the lead against Batesville Southside and we really never maintained the game with a lead but it was kind of back and forth but when we got it there at the end we never let up and we made our free throws,” said Chickasaws head coach McKenzie Pierce. “But you know we back doored our way to a conference championship in regular season. Try not to get overhyped for it but it is an accomplishment and we can look up here [at the banner] and it hasn’t been done in a long time and so when I got here three years ago this was my sophomore group and this is what we talk about is winning championships. So there is no sweeter way than to send these guys out, because these are the guys that have laid the foundation for what we are doing right now and for years to come. So, there is no better way to end Senior Night than with a championship with these guys.”

Pierce will be attending the 4A-3 conference meeting Wednesday to find out his team’s seed and matchup in the 4A-3 conference tournament. The tournament will be held in Pocahontas next week. The Chicks will host the Rivercrest Colts Thursday starting at 6 p.m.

The Lady Bearcats jumped out to a 17-13 lead and never looked back as they led 38-24 at the half.
