Edgar E. Byrd

Edgar E. Byrd (Ed) of Long Beach and Pasadena, Calif., died peacefully at home in Pasadena on Oct. 6, 2015, at the age of 100. He was surrounded by his family and long-time "sweetheart," Ms. Sally Ross of Pasadena. Ed was born in Leachville on April 30, 1915.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elvis and Lula Alice (Coffel) Byrd of Manila; a brother, Carl Madison; a sister, Myron ("Sandy") Birge; and his wife, Margaret Olive (Shirley), of Minburn, Iowa.

He is survived by his half-brother, Franklin Byrd of Manila; five children; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

After two stints in the Navy as a medic, Ed worked as an emergency room RN surgical assistant. After obtaining a BS in Biology/Education from USC and a subsequent law degree from Glendale College of Law, he worked as a legal investigator for The LA Department of Water & Power for 50 years, before retiring. He was always interested in science and often attended lectures at Cal Tech. He was a lover of nature and travel. During his long life, he was a member of the Navy League, Elks 99 Lodge and American Legion.

We will miss this gentle, inquisitive and engaging man, our "Captain." He was truly "one of the great ones."

A memorial service will be held in Los Angeles at 1st Congregational Church of LA at 3 p.m. Nov. 8.
