'Take Your Legislator to School'

Friday, September 4, 2015

Arkansas Representative Monte Hodges spoke to Blytheville High School teacher Kristy Brasfield's senior civics class on Thursday, September 3. Hodges tested the students' Arkansas Government knowledge by asking them questions. Those with the right answers received an Arkansas State flag. The visit was part of "Take Your Legislator to School." Members of the 90th General Assembly are reaching out to their local school districts in an effort to build better communication between educators and legislators. In the 2015 Regular Session the Arkansas General Assembly passed the resolution designating September as annual "Take Your Legislator to School Month." This bipartisan initiative was motivated by a need for members of the General Assembly to fully understand the issues and challenges facing public schools in their districts, as well as the innovative solutions our educators are developing. HCR1008 encourages public school districts to plan special events with their local legislators. Examples could include allowing legislators to visit classrooms, read to students, or present guest lectures; school-sponsored panel discussions in which administrators, teachers, and students discuss issues facing their schools; or any activity that engages and involves legislators in the work of their public school.
