R.E. "Bud" Cannon

R.E. "Bud" Cannon, 91, of Jonesboro, formerly of Monette, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015. He was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Senath, Mo., to the late Ben and Mary Essie Tierce Cannon. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the Monette American Legion Post 136. He retired from United Telephone Company as district manager and was the president of the Arkansas Independent Telephone Association. He served his community as a member of the Masonic Lodge in Monette and served on the Monette School Board as president.

He was a member of the Monette First United Methodist Church for over 60 years and served in many roles, including the Sunday School superintendent. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed duck hunting and fishing with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Lynnda Cannon; son, Dr. Robert "David" Cannon (Patti) of Springdale; daughters, Melinda Bennett of Monette, Diane Jeu of Fairhope, Ala., and Learon Gambill of Jonesboro; seven grandchildren, Kristen Mangrum (Wayne) of Jonesboro, Jon Jeu (Robin) of Conway, Spencer Jeu (Brittany) of Jonesboro, Casey Rackley (Chase) of Little Rock, Kelsey Qualls of Fayetteville, Callie Cannon and Evie Cannon of Springdale; four great-grandchildren, Allie Mangrum, Austin Jeu, Jilliyn Jeu and Abby Jeu.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Patricia Dudley Cannon; two sons-in-law, George Bennett and Mike Jeu.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at Monette First United Methodist Church with Revs. Jerry Reed and Gary Wiles officiating. Burial will follow at Monette Memorial Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Gregg Funeral Home in Monette.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Mike Estes, Dennis Gathright, Danny Qualls, Jerry Lynn Halsey, Jon Jeu and Spencer Jeu. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Robert Flannigan, W.T. Bibb, Dr. Dennis Parten, Red Palmer and Buddy Dudley.
