Groups see "Selma"

Friday, January 16, 2015

On Jan. 11, mentors of Daddy's Diamonds and Healing in the Hood took youth members of each organization to see the movie "Selma" as part of their educational curriculum. Daddy's Diamonds had been through four weeks of classes on different cultures, and in the upcoming month, they will focus on the importance of voting and knowing your rights as a citizen. Directors for Daddy's Diamonds, Rhonda Hodges and Nicole Gillespie, strongly felt is was necessary for the girls to have insight on the struggles African-Americans dealt with, understand their sacrifices and pain in order for them to enjoy the many freedoms we sometimes take for granted. Healing in the Hood director Sandy Gillespie felt it was important to bring awareness of the past and to understand the fight many African-Americans went through, to allow citizens today to be able to enjoy sitting freely in a movie theater. Daddy's Diamonds meets every Monday at 5 p.m., and Healing in the Hood meets every Wednesday at 5 p.m., at 121 S. Second Street in Blytheville. For more, contact Rhonda Hodges at 870-740-8004 or Sandy Gillespie at 870-623-4742.
