Letter to the Editor

Jesus Christ is still the real reason for the season

Monday, December 15, 2014

To the editor:

In response to Chris Pinkard's article on the editorial page of last Thursday's (Dec. 11) Courier, I am questioning your position on allowing such an article to be published unqualified: one man's ppinion.

The real reason for the season IS the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Again: Christ's birth really is the real reason for the season. I'm not going tit-for-tat on each point; however, all of us know that Dec. 25, is probably not Jesus Christ's birthday, but since it has been appointed the day for all of us to celebrate together, we do. Conversely, there is no doubt that there is too much materialism, glitz and nerves, but the Bible gives us examples of gift-giving: the wise men's gifts to Jesus and celebrating, such as at Queen Ester's freeing of the Jews in her day. There are admonitions for sharing with the needy, the peace on earth, the joy at the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ and the music: the angel's songs.

Let us not fall into the trap of sacrilege and skip the real reason: the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
