Alice Delight Karr-Nichols

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Alice Delight Karr-Nichols, 66 of Columbus, Miss., and formerly of Gosnell and Hardy, passed from this life on Sunday June 22, 2014, at the Good Samaritan HealthCare facility in Omaha, Neb., where she was temporarily employed as a contract director of nursing.

She was born to James Franklin and Alice Canamore Bailey in Dell, and resided in Columbus, Miss., over the last seven years.

It was fitting for Alice to be at her place of work when she died, for she loved to work with and train the nurses who care for elderly patients and health care residents. She was no stranger to work and at times had up to three jobs at once. When challenged by life's adversities, she would accept her responsibilities and do whatever was needed to accomplish her goals. Her profession as a traveling contract nurse allowed her to work throughout the country to help health care facilities become more proficient in meeting the needs of the elderly. She possessed a special gift of love and compassion, which allowed her to connect with those she cared for and to improve the level of care they received.

Alice also looked after her entire family and was generous to a fault. She had a wonderful, slightly "twisted" sense of humor, which made you feel relaxed and at ease. She saw life in a very realistic light and used her humor to help improve the daily actions of family, friends and co-workers. As a daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend, she exhibited love in her own special way.

In her lifetime, Alice cared for, brought humor and joy, shared special moments with those who had no one in their lives, and had a work ethic that allowed her to help so many individuals when they needed her most.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Bailey, and her first husband, Ralph Wesley Karr.

Alice is survived by her husband, Keith Nichols of the home;

Her mother, Alice Bailey of Greensboro, N.C.;

Her children, Lisa Morgan of Kansas City, Mo., James Wesley Karr and his wife Shore of Cherokee Village, and Marty Javin Karr and his wife Cassie of Columbus, Miss.;

Her grandchildren, Ryan and Sierra Karr of Columbus, Miss.;

Her sister, Janis Little and her husband Richard of Greensboro, N.C.;

Her nieces, Susan Little Valickas of New York City and Laura Little Jones of Montclair, N.J.; and

Her mother-in-law, Rachel Nichols.

A gathering of family and friends for a graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, in Elmwood Cemetery, with Mr. Billy Holifield officiating. Services will be directed by Cobb Funeral Home of Blytheville.
