More hens won't better ward of the fox

To the editor:

I often hear some people complain that the "system" is rigged against the "little guy." That big powerful interests use their influence over legislators and government administrators to gain advantage and unjustified profit. Almost always, the prescription is the same: more regulation and resultant bigger government.

But what husbandman that seeth his henhouse raideth by a fox doth add even more hens thinking that more hens can better ward off the fox? Will not the fruit of his endeavor be more and fatter foxes? And will not the wolves when they see the fatness of the foxes come and devour the husbandman's ass, leaving husbandman without a means to till the field? And will these foxes and wolves be content with their bounty or will they not also devour that of his neighbor?
