To the editor:

The Blytheville Humane Society is celebrating its first anniversary as a no-kill shelter. What an accomplishment!

The volunteers and staff are dedicated and passionate about caring for our animals. It is a pleasure to visit the shelter knowing that every dog and cat has a chance to find a forever home.

The shelter is always full but that doesn't mean that we don't help any animal that comes to the shelter. We currently have 20 foster homes. These foster homes have been invaluable in helping us care for more animals. Our connection with rescue groups nationwide has enabled us to get our animals publicity. You can see our pets on adoptapet.com. With all this exposure we have increased our adoptions to about 15 dogs and seven cats a month. We have adopted animals to people in Dallas, New York City, Mountain Home, Idaho, Atlanta, St. Louis and Cody, Wyo. There are many transport groups that make these long-distance adoptions possible.

We provide a low-cost spay/neuter program. Our mission is to end euthanasia of adoptable animals in our area. The best solution to end the pet overpopulation problem is to spay and neuter all pets. The City Council is working with us to get a spay/neuter ordinance passed. Hopefully this will be enacted this year.

Volunteers work countless hours to make money to help save our area animals. We have two thrift stores that support our shelter. The shelter also survives on fundraisers and concerned citizen donations. Blytheville has many kind-hearted people that care about how our animals are treated.

Please attend our next fundraiser, which is a Bean Feed to be held at the First United Methodist Church on March 2, starting at 5 p.m. Those sweet faces will be so thankful!
