Finding faith in present-day society

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

To the editor:

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of TV shows about 12-21-2012 and the Mayan colander ending. For some reason, there are apparently a lot of people who worry about this event and the end of the world. Maybe I'm too simple, but I don't get it. Every year on Jan. 1, I throw away my calendar from the previous year that has ended. The world then has gone on to a new year. It then came to me that this was a symptom of the state of belief and faith in present day society. Many people are wandering through life with no anchor from the stress and worries of the times. I know there was a time when that was true in my own life.

I don't have a lot of remembrances from when I was very young. I didn't live in a harmonious environment and there was frequent contentious arguing. What I do remember at the age of 8 or less, while laying in bed one night, was that I looked out the window and saw something I had never noticed before. It was a light on a church on the highest hill in the area that flashed on and off. The message was simple as it flashed on, off, on, off, on, off. It simply said: "Jesus Saves, Jesus Saves, Jesus Saves." I didn't fully understand the meaning at first -- that would come later. It did give comfort though to a kid that could hear mom and dad arguing again in the next room. Now, of course, I understand that message and what it means to all that take it to heart. If I were rich enough, the one thing I would do for the world, the United States, Arkansas and Blytheville would be to build towers with flashing lights at the top and the message they would flash through the night would be: "Jesus Still Saves, Jesus Still Saves, Jesus Still Saves." Maybe other people could take the same comfort in watching and reading it that a young boy did many years ago.

If you want to learn more about how this is possible, the next time you are about town and passing one of many churches in the area, go on in and ask how you can learn more about Jesus and how to accept his gift of salvation.
