Cancer screenings can save lives

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

To the editor:

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end, breast cancer does not. Breast cancer research has made great strides, but every day many women are still diagnosed with this disease. Studies have found that women have a 12 percent lifetime risk, or about 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer.

Individual risk is affected by many different factors, such as family history, environment, obesity, exercise, child-bearing as well as others factors. Please remember to have your annual mammogram if you are over 40 or if you are at risk. My annual screening helped save my life. All breast cancers are not lumps and can only be detected by mammograms.

In 2011, there were more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. Early detection is very important.

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
