Thoughts on golf, streets and the Sportsplex

To the editor:

Just wanted to acknowledge a few things that I've noticed in the city lately.

One, our new greenskeeper for Thunder Bayou seems to be a good fit and the mayor should feel good about his selection.

Two, the road construction in our city is progress and has been a long time coming. I can't help but wonder why we can't purchase our own equipment and do our own road work. The equipment being used is relatively small and could be leased or purchased over time and benefit our town more in the long run.

Three, it's great to see the ball fields being used to such a great extent. I hope the effort is being made to get the underprivileged kids involved. I'm also curious as to why there are no adult leagues such as there was back in the early '80s -- women's and men's softball teams. Maybe Mark Brasfield could take up that battle since he's the ballfield expert, and while he's at it, maybe he can tell us how much revenue is being generated with all these games. There's money from advertising signs, $5 per car coming through the gate and all the concession stand money that should be generating a lot of revenue, but no one wants to talk about it. Where is that money, and why isn't it being accounted for?

Four, please don't vote for anyone who was part of Harrison's regime. No one who assisted Harrison in any way should be allowed to advance their career after we were put into a bad situation with the IRS. Just saying.

Five, I have a positive feeling about Blytheville right now but know there are plenty of areas where we can still improve. I'm looking forward to see what step forward we'll take next.
