Survivor Dinner called a success

Friday, October 28, 2011

To the editor:

The North Mississippi County Relay for Life teams sponsored a Survivor Dinner Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Fairview Baptist Family Center in Blytheville. Approximately 25 survivors were in attendance along with the Relay for Life team members and guests. It is an honor for the Relay for Life teams to sponsor this event and we hope each year that more and more survivors will be able to attend.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped out. First, I want to thank Fairview Baptist Church for allowing us the use of their Family Center and setting up tables and chairs. Special thanks to Hays Supermarkets, Southern Bancorp, Westminster Village, Carol Lammers, Palace Ayres Cakes & More, Hill Services, Haas Environmental, Dan with Strollberg Inc., Kream Castle, Nucor Hickman and Nucor-Yamato for providing all the drinks, food and supplies.

A very special "thanks" to Kevin and Laurie Byrd for cooking the Boston butts and chickens. They were delicious! I also want to thank the Target boys and girls who come out every year to help serve and cater to the survivors. We appreciate you so much. Thanks also to Barbara Williams with For Every Home who donated a beautiful candle basket as a door prize. A special thanks to Schlosser Photography for taking pictures of the survivors for our Relay event. I want to thank Keri House, Area Director for Eastern Arkansas American Cancer Society, for helping to coordinate this dinner and providing table decorations and goodie bags and to Kristie Fuller, the Hero of Hope guest speaker.

And last, but certainly not least, I want to extend a very special "thank you" to the entire Relay for Life team members. None of this would be possible without them. They are dedicated volunteers who work all year around to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The teams raised over $100,000 last year as well as previous years. That goes to show how hard they work to help find a cure for cancer and I appreciate them very much. They are already gearing up for the June 2012 Relay for Life Event. We look forward to another great year!
