Mr. Curtis D. Newton, 48, of Wynne, was called home Friday, July 15, 2011, at Wynne.

He was born Sept. 30, 1962, in Jonesboro, to William Jay and Madeline Poff Newton.

Formerly of Lake City, Curtis graduated Lake City High School as valedictorian and went to Arkansas State and Henderson State Universities until he realized his calling was with the United States Postal Service, following in his father's footsteps. As postmaster in Wynne, Curt began his 27-year career in the Wilson and Blytheville offices, then served as Postmaster in Luxora, Cherry Valley, Caraway and Marked Tree. Curt also served as a customer service analyst in New Orleans during the rebuilding of that area after Hurricane Catrina.

He held offices of secretary/treasurer, vice president and president with the First District Arkansas Postal Workers Union of Blytheville and secretary/treasurer of the Arkansas Postal Workers Union. Curtis had been a member of several community organizations, receiving many awards and honors for his dedication and service. Curtis was passionate about his job and served his community with all his heart. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will truly be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Pearlie Newton; and brother, Garry Newton.

He leaves two brothers and their wives, Randy Newton (and Sandra) of Greenbriar, and Bill Newton (and Charlotte) of Bay;

Three sisters and their husbands, Linda Jones (and Willie) of Trumann, Pam Snyder (and Curtis) of Paragould, and Rilla Cope (and Bill) of Jonesboro;

One step-brother and his wife, Danny Strickland (and Janice) of Lake City;

His companion, Barbie Baldwin, and her son, Dail Baldwin, both of the home, and her daughter, Heather Baldwin, of Wynne; and

Several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will held at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Danny Taylor officiating at Gregg Funeral Home in Jonesboro with burial following in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
