Winnie Spikes

Winnie Spikes, 71, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at St. Bernards Medical Center. She was born Feb. 25, 1938 in Lake City to the late H.R. and Hazel Owens. She had taught at Gosnell for a few years and retired from Buffalo Island Central Elementary School in Monette. Mrs. Winnie was a lifelong active member of the Bethabara Baptist Church where she was the organist and a Sunday school teacher for many years and a past president of the WMU. She will be remembered for her big heart, warm smile and her compassion to all that knew her, especially all of her kids from church and school.

Survivors include her children, Lesleye Hawkins and husband Darren of Monette, Wes Spikes and wife Shelley of Jonesboro, Wade Spikes and Wyeth Spikes both of Monette; three grandchildren, Lauren Dowless, Kennedy Spikes and Will Spikes; five brothers, Hershel Owens (Theresa) of West Memphis, Larry Owens (Sue) of Jonesboro, Garry Owens and Donnie Owens (Monica), all of Lake City, and Mike Owens of Conway; four sisters and their husbands, Peggy Diane and George Wright and Janet and Rick Brewer, all of Jonesboro, Deborah and Gary Gilley of Lake City and Beverly and Kenny Lomax of Jonesboro, and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Spikes; two brothers, Bobby Owens and Ronald Owens, and her father and mother-in-law, Lloyd and Lima Spikes.

A celebration of her life was held on Saturday, July 4 at 10 a.m. at the Bethabara Baptist Church with Revs. Larry Owens and Donald Strait officiating. Burial was in Monette Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home in Monette.

Visitation was held Friday, July 3, from 5-7 p.m. at the Gregg Funeral Home in Monette.

Honored to serve as pallbearers were her nephews and Darren Hawkins and Brant Dowless.

Family requests lasting memorial be sent to the Bethabara Baptist Church or Alzheimer's Association.
