Lake City

Billy D. Stone, 72, of Lake City, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born in Lake City on March 31, 1935, to the late Elmer and Ruby Stone, he was a member of the Lake City United Methodist Church. He received a B.S.E. degree in English and history at Arkansas State University. Mr. Stone taught school for 39 years. He taught at Lake City, Childress and Caraway. He taught social studies, English journalism and was the librarian for many years at Riverside School. He was a member of several school clubs including Beta Club, yearbook sponsor, several beauty pageants and was a member of several educational associations. He was a former member of the Arkansas National Guard.

Survivors include a brother, Henry Stone, and his wife, Elizabeth; several cousins and a special caregiver, Correne Lawson, and other teacher friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with Elder Wayne Heideburg and Kent McDaniel officiating. Burial was under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Honorary pallbearers were Karen Hook, Linda Finch, Barbara Fletcher, Correne Lawson, Melba Thomas, Pat Hawkins, Katie Sanderson, Anna Fay Rush, Sharon Jennings, Mazie Henry, Jennie Sue Taylor, Cathryn Griffin, Jaquelyn Howell, Edna Heidelburg and all former teachers.
