Leonard William Whitehead, 81, of Manila, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at NEA Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was the son of the late James and Blanche Vernor Whitehead and had been a Manila area resident until moving to Salinas, Calif., in 1950 where he worked for the Salinas Union High School District for many years as well as the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital before returning to Manila in 1989. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Manila.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Janette Whitehead, a brother, Glenn Wilkey, and two sisters, Pauline Jones and Nellie Stone.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Joan Whitehead, of the home; a daughter, Monda Linda Hessler, of Manila; four brothers, Marvin Whitehead of Blytheville, Junior Whitehead of Leachville, Charles Wilkey of Bradford, Wendell Wilkey of Jonesboro; eight sisters, Marie Gamble of Osceola, Jerline McDowell of Manila, Earline Hicks of Bowling Green, Ky., Mary Kis of Blytheville, Bertha McCormick of Manila, Glenda Johnson of Manila, Barbara Warren of Potosi, Mo., and Linda Brewer of Jonesboro.

The funeral was held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Manila First Baptist Church with Rev. Ferrel Duffel officiating. Burial was in the Manila Cemetery under the direction of Howard Funeral Service of Manila.
