Kenneth "He'Hi" McWhirter

Kenneth "He-Hi" McWhirter, 83, lifelong resident of Manila, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, after a long fight with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Born at Manila, he was the son of the late Charles and Maude Kilgore McWhirter who settled in Manila by way of covered wagon in 1912 from the Trimble, Tenn., area.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ethel and Pauline, and his brothers, Oscar "Jack" McWhirter, Huron "Bud" McWhirter, Max Wayne "Cush" McWhirter and Charles "Ellis" McWhirter, Jr.

His father and brother, Max Wayne McWhirter, both served as mayor of Manila in the late 1920s. Mr. McWhirter retired from the Manila Post Office as Route 1 mail carrier for over 50 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School in the junior high department for 25 years. He also coached basketball and baseball for Little League, Babe Ruth and Pony Leagues for many years.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Manila with Rev. Farrel Duffel and Rev. William Piercy officiating. Burial will follow in the Manila Cemetery under the direction of Howard Funeral Service of Manila. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. this evening (Tuesday) at the funeral home.

Active pallbearers are Art Slaton, Jimmy Hicks, Paul Wayne Hicks, Garry Cole, Roger Vandyke, Tony Costner, Craig Costner and Carl Brooks.

Honorary pallbearers will include Bill Knight, Dr. Grover Evans, Dr. E.A. Shaneyfelt, J.B. Brown, Fonzie Rice, Monte Grimes, Bobby White, Michael Tucker, Bobby Tucker, Danny Robbins, Jack Wagner, Hulen Faulkner, L.B. Gunn, Jimmy Hitchcock, Jim Mills and Lonnie Wright.
