Raymond Arvil Chipman, Sr., M.D., 89, of Columbus, Ga., died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the Columbus Hospice House. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel with Dr. Gienn Martin officiating. A private burial followed in Parkhill Cemetery.

Dr. Chipman was born Aug. 22, 1916, in Leachville. He was the son of the late Otis DeCater Chipman and his wives, Mary Whisenhunt Chipman and Bobby Gathright Chipman. Dr. Chipman was born and raised in the Childress Community. He was the last surviving member of the first graduating class of Childress in 1934. He had lived in Columbus for the past 63 years and was a member of Wynnton United Methodist Church where he served as a steward. Dr. Chipman was a graduate of the University of Arkansas and the Medical College of Arkansas. He retired from the medical field after working for 42 years in the Columbus and Phenix City area. Dr. Chipman served as president of the Muscogee County Medical Society and was a 33rd Degree Mason. He was a U.S. Army veteran, during which time he served in World War II in the medical field.

Dr. Chipman was preceded in death by his wife, Millie Nadine Fowler Chipman, a son, James Austin Chipman, and a sister, Christeene Chipman.

Survivors include three children, Katherine Chipman Bush, and her husband, Ronnie, of Columbus; Raymond A. Chipman, Jr., and his wife, Patricia Craven of Columbus; and Charles Dean Chipman, M.D., and his wife, Wendy Blair, of Columbus; seven grandchildren, Shannon Bush Whittington, and her husband Charles, Amber Bush Bannister, and her husband Harry, Jr., Keilani Chipman Betkowski, and her husband Brian, Patrick Dean Chipman, Alexander Beck Chipman, Tyler Marie Blair, and Raymond Joseph Blair; three great-grandchildren, Tanner Charles Whittington, Walker Owen Whittington and Harry Edward Bannister, III, and daughter-in-law, Mary Alice "Mouse" Chipman.
