Hazel Mae Nothern Owens - Lake City

Hazel Mae Nothern Owens, 85, of Lake City, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born in Sulphur Rock, she moved to Lake City in the 1920's, and lived the rest of her life in the Lake City area. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bethabara Baptist Church near Lake City where she taught Sunday School School for many years.

She is survived by five daughters, Winnie Spikes of Monette, Deborah Gilley of Lake City, and Peggy Wright, Janet Brewer, and Beverly Lomax, all of Jonesboro; five sons, Hershel Owens of West Memphis, Larry Owens of Jonesboro, Mike Owens of Conway, and Garry Owens and Donnie Owens, both of Lake City; a sister, Mary Louise Northern of Lake City; a brother, Dr. Elbert Nothern of Memphis; 33 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H.R. Owens, Jr., two sons, Bobby Owens and Ronald Owens, two brothers and a sister.

The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bethabara Baptist Church near Lake City with Rev. Larry Owens and Rev. Don Strait officiating. Burial was in Cane Island Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro in charge of arrangements.

Grandsons served as active pallbearers. Vaunda Bowers, Bill Hook, David Curtis, Doug Coleman and J.M. Cossey served as honorary pallbearers.
